Like a travel book, I took notes on the places, concerts and people I met during this week in Germany, which was, once more, memorable...

Departure from Geneva, direction Berlin. I drop my luggage at the Alexander Platz train station, and go straight to U56, the mythical club in East Berlin, in the area of Kreuzberg, where I have a rendezvous with Julien (promoter of the Külschrank/Frigidaire evenings in Lausanne (CH)) and who is putting me up for the night. On the schedule, that night: Leinigrad which, as its name conveys, is a group of Rouskoufs, firing up an audience of over 800 fellow nationals, dancing on a mix of rock steady and a sort of samba, with a touch of klesmatique, in the pure tradition of the music of their youth...

The next day, departure for Leipzig. As I reach the train station, I see, as every year, hundreds of Grufties from the 4 corners of Europe walking through the hallways of the station. The défilé starts. I am immediately in the spirit. It's always a great moment... I wait for my next meeting, this time it's Manu (alias Xabec , Ant Zen Records & Underwater Pilots , a more synthpop-pop project) who is hosting me. And quite fast I find myself in front of the ticket point to pick up my pass for the Darklife Fanzine. I attempt, as good as possible, to make myself understood in a more than basic German (and reminisce back on my school days when I would react epidemically to the sounds of Goethe's language. Perhaps I should have made more of an effort? Let's move on...)

The festivities kick-off at Werk II with an off-festival evening. I find myself in front of LAIABCH, offering a tribute to BACH in a pretty exceptional live: à la Kraftwerk , the four band players are standing still behind their laptops, presenting in quadriphony quite a hermetic and cold show. After the intro, each combo member takes place around a chessboard in the shape of a cross - unrealistic play. And starts a game which will last an hour. I am perplexed, maybe slightly skeptical. I am not truly able to decipher the quintessential meaning of this performance... But I enjoy the exceptional sound that LAIABCH gave us that night, a true work of precision! Following this, as all good party-goers, I find my way to the AGRA 4.2 for a round of Dj-sets until the end of the night...

This is how my photography work begins in the lions' cage. On average 20 to 150 soul eaters are losing their patience as they await the signal given by a security guard to allow us all, one by one, to reach to the front of the hall by the stage (take note that you better not mix up the right and the left sides of the stage as you wait for the famous whistle. Experience made: if you take the wrong side, no matter how much you try to convince the nice vigil with a glacial smile, you're in trouble!). However, fair player, I accept the rules and I leave for a tour of Parkbühne to take my first shots of the festival with the group XANGRIA. Then comes the turn of DREAMSIDE: metal-gothic sounds with good intensity and a singer who stands out with a mask straight from the Venice Carnival, a very polished composition and highly noticed by an audience of fans. One is easily fascinated by the bass player, who in spite of a handicap on his left arm, is surprising by his great accuracy in rhythm. SAMAEL follow, without any doubt the best Swiss group in this style that many try to copy, without ever succeeding in reaching their strength and originality. Once more, the four musicians offer us a majestic live with a near perfect presence right as the night started to fall. Superb. It is then time to go to the Agra.

I make it at the end of the concert of DRACUL, just to make myself an idea, ok....an impression of déjà vu, that stops me from truly entering this Mozart atmosphere... Then, DEATHSTARS, the Swedish Marylin Manson , lighten up pretty fast the audience with their strongly Scandinavian rock with accents metal pieces. Then it's the tunr of LACRIMOSA, second Helvetic combo for today. It's not the time for a toilet break or anything: the room is bursting with people, 15 minutes to throw myself at last into the cage where I can only stay for 7 miserable minutes before the second round of photographers are allowed in to replace us... and I have to admit that Tilo Wolff and Anne Nurmi Manier are stunning! I had never seen them live, and there, I stayed blown away by their Best Of performed with an amazing intensity.

Then I follow with NITZER EBB and the great return of Mc CARTY on the EBM scene, after more than ten years of close to nothing - playing in little clubs and a few festivals. It's with FIXMER that the fellow got back into the flow. 2006 marks his comeback with his biggest successes that he revisits each night admirably well. Then, direction Anker , where the Italians SPIRITUAL FRONT are playing at 21h45.

After 30 minutes of tram, I am thrown out because of the liquid yoghurt I have in my bag. I get rid of it and return, I realise that the people with the festival bracelet are not allowed in the room, only those with the black one and the press are given access... Someone will have to explain this to me.... This is a club where the style is visibly neo-folk and the atmosphere is quite easy. The singer, composer Simone Salvatori arrives on stage dressed in a black shirt and a white tie, he salutes the crowd and they return words of respect and veneration. He captivated the audience, throughout the concert with old tunes but also those from the new work Armageddon Gigolo , while in the background the film Raging Bull with Robert de Niro is projected.

I radically change style with GLIS, Seattle combo that was projected on the stage of Kohlrabizirkus playing a set of electro-power-noise, EBM style, with flabbergasting energy, touching the spirits and leaving a well heated audience for the next show... SONAR the most electro project by Dirk Ivens ( Klinik , Dive and boss of the label Daft Records ) and Eric Van Wonterghem ( Monolith , Insekt ) who, in a decibel overvoltage, lead the rhythm of industrial beats and hammering hooks, that throws a spell on the audience of true fans ecstatic in front of the unrivalled leaders in this field.


Dark Flower Day. As if it were 2.00 in the morning but in the middle of the afternoon: the room is full, the atmosphere warm and the dj electrodark the way I like it! I stay there with pleasure for 2 -3 drinks. Then it's time to get some fresh air and do some shopping at Xtra, where for the occasion they opened a gothico-rock n' roll sales arcade. Back to the concerts: KILING MIRANDA play in front of too few people in my view, but overflow with positive energy with a heavy and titanic crossover-metal-hindu. Then I go to Werk II , one of the most mythical clubs in Leipzig that has a appealing program throughout the year. That's where IMPLANT plays. I leave my camera with Damian ( Bak XII ) because I'm going to to take over the mixing table. A true joy! The concert is a wonder: IMPLANT set the room on fire, and the crowd falls under the charm of the Belgian duo, who work regularly with Anne Clark . Then another discovery with SONO, a character playing a pretty clubbing and fresh electro-pop-rock, that leaves me the same good impression as IAMX during the WGT 2005 with simply great tubesc melodies.

Then follows a final show at the Morizbasteï , a place all made in bricks, magical and magnificent with its hallways and labyrinths. Edward Kaspel and his LEGENDARY PINK DOTS, they haven't taken a single wrinkle, despite their 40 albums and long career. This concert is truly generous, for the lovers of music made by lovers of this art that makes us all vibrate. I am always amazed by this combo, they'll never cease to amaze me.





My little stay is reaching its end. The WGT remains a unique festival, admirably organised in a highly welcoming and rich city that really deserves visiting. I hope one day to be honoured to perform there with our project BAK XIII ;-)

Un peu comme un carnet de voyage, j’ai pris des notes au gré des lieux, des concerts et des personnes que j’ai rencontrés durant cette semaine en Allemagne, qui restera, une fois encore, mémorable…
Départ de Genève, direction Berlin. Je pose mes bagage à la consigne de la gare Alexander Platz, puis je me rends directement au U56, club mythique de Berlin Est, dans le quartier de Kreutzberg, où j’ai rendez-vous avec Julien (organisateur des soirées Külschrank/Frigidaire à Lausanne (CH)) qui doit m’héberger pour la nuit. Au programme ce soir-là : « Leinigrad » qui est, comme son nom peux l’indiquer, un groupe de rouskouf qui ce soir met le feu à une salle de plus de 800 compatriotes, dansant sur un mélange de rock steady et d’une sorte de samba, avec un soupçon de klesmatique, dans la pure tradition des musiques qui ont bercé leur enfance…
Le lendemain matin, départ direction Leipzig. Arrivé à la gare, je vois comme chaque année des centaine de Grufties des 4 coins de l’Europe arpenter les halls et les couloirs de la gare. Le défilé commence. Je suis tout de suite dans le bain. C’est toujours un grand moment… J’attends mon nouveau rendez vous, c’est cette fois Manu (alias Xabec (ant Zen Records) & Underwater Pilots, projet plus synté-pop) qui m’offre l’hospitalité. Et assez vite je me retrouve devant les guichets pour prendre mon accréditation pour le Darklife Fanzine. Je tente tant bien que mal de me faire comprendre dans un allemand plus que rudimentaire (et repense tout à coup à une certaine époque, où, sur les bancs d’école, je régissais de manière assez épidermique aux sons de la langue de Goethe. Peut-être que j’aurais dû… ? Passons…)

Les festivités commencent au Werk II avec une soirée hors festival. Je me retrouve donc devant « Laibach », qui nous propose un tribute à BACH dans un live assez exceptionnel : à la Kraftwerk, les quatre protagonistes sont immobiles derrière leur laptop, présentant en quadriphonie un show assez hermétique et froid. Après l’intro, chaque membre du combo prend place autour d’un échiquier en forme de croix - façon plus irréaliste de jouer. Et commence une partie qui va durer une heure. Je suis perplexe, peut-être un peu sceptique. Je n’arrive pas réellement à saisir la quintessence de cette performance… mais je profite en revanche du son exceptionnel que Laibach nous donne ce soir-là, un véritable travail d’orfèvre ! Suite à cela, comme tout bon fêtard, je me rends à l’AGRA 4.2 pour une partie de Dj-sets jusqu’au bout de la nuit….

Voici que commence enfin mon boulot de photographe dans la fosse aux lions. En moyenne, ce sont à chaque fois entre 20 et 150 mangeurs d’âmes qui piétinent d’impatience jusqu’au coup d’envoi donné par un responsable de la sécurité, qui nous permet enfin de courir jusqu’au devant de la scène. (A noter qu’il vaut mieux ne pas confondre la droite et la gauche de la scène pour attendre ce fameux coup de sifflet, expérience faite : si tu te plantes de côté, tu as beau tenter de soudoyer le sympathique vigile au sourire glacial, tu l’as dans l’os !). Cependant, bon joueur, j’accepte les règles et je pars faire un tour au Parkbühne pour aller faire mes premiers clichés du festival avec le groupe Xangria. Puis vient le tour de Dreamside : des sons metal-gothique qui tiennent bien la route et une chanteuse qui se démarque avec un masque sorti tout droit du carnaval de Venise, une compositions très soignée et hautement remarquée par un public de fans. On est facilement fascinés par le bassiste, qui malgré son handicap au bras gauche, surprend par sa grande précision rythmique. Suit Samael, sans aucun doute le meilleur groupe suisse du style, dont beaucoup tentent d’imiter le style, sans jamais arriver à leur puissance et leur originalité. Une fois de plus, les quatre musiciens nous offrent un live majestueux avec une présence quasi parfaite juste au moment où la nuit commence à tomber. Superbe. Il est temps ensuite de rejoindre l’Agra. J’arrive à la fin du concert de Dracul, juste histoire de me faire une petite idée, soit… une impression de déjà vu, qui m’empêche franchement d’entrer dans cette ambiance que propose Mozart…
Puis, Deathstars, les Marylin Manson suédois, embrasent assez vite le public avec leur morceaux de metal bien typés scandinaves aux accents toutefois rock. Arrivent ensuite Lacrimosa, deuxième combo helvétique. Ce n’est pas le moment de faire une quelconque pause toilette ou autre : la salle est surbondée, 15 minutes pour pouvoir m’élancer enfin dans la fosse où on ne pourra rester que malheureuses7 minutes afin que la deuxième horde de photographes puisse nous remplacer… et je dois avouer que Tilo Wolff et Anne Nurmi Manier assurent ! Je ne les avais jamais vus en live et là, je reste scotché devant ce Best Of d’une intensivité remarquable…
Puis j’enchaîne avec Nitzer Ebb et le grand retour de Mc Carty sur la scène EBM, après plus de dix ans de vide ou presque, passant de petits clubs à quelques festivals. C’est avec Fixmer que le bonhomme à repris du poil de la bête. 2006 célèbre son retour avec ses plus grands succès qu’il revisite ce soir admirablement bien. Puis, direction le Anker, où les italiens de Spiritual Front doivent jouer à 21h45. Après 30 minutes de tram, je me fais jeter à cause du yaourt liquide que j’ai dans mon sac. Je m’en débarrasse et je reviens, je constate que les personne qui ont le bracelet du festival ne peuvent pas rentrer dans la salle, seuls ceux qui portent le model noir ainsi que la presse sont conviés... il faudra qu’on m’explique… Je rentre donc dans le club où visiblement la tendance du public est néo-folk et l’ambiance est assez bon enfant. Le chanteur, compositeur Simone Salvatori arrive sur scène vêtu d’une chemise noire et d’une cravate blanche, il salue l’auditoire qui lui retourne des paroles empreintes de respect et de vénération. Un public attentif tout au long de ce concert qui nous offre d’anciens titres mais également ceux de„Armageddon Gigolo“ pendant qu’au second plan défile le film „Raging Bull“ de Robert de Niro.

Je change radicalement de registre avec Glis, combo de Seattle qui se retrouve propulsé sur la scène du Kohlrabizirkus nous livrant un set electro-power-noise façon ebm d’une énergie des plus fulgurantes, marquant les esprits et laissant ainsi une salle surchauffée pour la suite… Sonar le projet le plus electro de Dirk Iven (Klinik, Dive et patron du label Dart records) et d’Eric Van Wonterghem (Monolith, Insekt) qui avec un survoltage de décibels, danse au rythme des beats indus et du matraquages qui ensorcellent un public de véritables fans déchaînés devant le maître incontesté de cette discipline.

Journée au Dark Flower. Comme si c’était 2heure du matin mais en plein après midi : la salle est bondée à craquer, l’ambiance est chaleureuse et le dj très electrodark comme j’aime ! J’y reste donc volontiers pour boire 2 ou 3 verres. Puis il est temps d’aller reprendre l’air et de faire un peu de shoping à « Xtra » qui pour l’occasion a ouvert une arcade de solderie gothico-rock n’ roll. Retour aux concerts : les Killing Miranda jouent devant trop peu de monde à mon goût, mais débordent d’énergie positive avec un crossover-metal-indus lourd et titanesque. Puis, je me rends auWerk II, un des clubs les plus mythique de Leipzig qui présente toute l’année une programmation régulière et alléchante. C’est là que Implant s’aiguise les dents. Je laisse pour l’occasion mon appareil photo à Damian (Bak XII) puisque je dois prendre possession des commandes de la console de mixage. Un vrai bonheur ! Le concert est une merveille : Implant met le feu à la salle qui (re)tombe sous le charme du duo belge que l’on sait travailler régulièrement avec Anne Clark .Puis, encore une découverte avec Sono personnage pratiquant une electro-pop-rock très clubing et très fraîche, qui me laisse la même bonne impression que IAMX lors du WGT 2005 avec des mélodie tubesques et simplement géniales.
S’ensuit un show final au Morizbasteï, lieu tout en brique, magique et magnifique avec ses couloirs et ses labyrinthes, avec Edward Kaspel et ses Legendary Pink Dots qui n’ont pris aucune rides, malgré leurs 40 albums et une longue carrière. Ce concert est véritablement généreux, pour les amoureux de la musique fait par des amoureux de cet art qui nous fait vibrer. Je suis à chaque fois éblouis par ce combo et me réjouis déjà de leur prochain passage à l’Usine de Genève (CH) le 30/08/06 !

Mon petit séjour touche déjà à sa fin. Le WGT reste un festival unique, organisé de manière admirable dans une ville accueillante et riche qu’il faut véritablement prendre la peine de visiter. J’espère un jour pouvoir y venir jouer avec notre projet BAK XIII ;-)
